Welcome to the Black & White Darkroom at the Queensland Centre for Photography
Our black and white darkroom is open to members with prior darkroom experience. If you’re new to our space, you’ll start with a one-time induction session. This session helps you become familiar with the equipment and layout. While it’s not a workshop, it offers a practical overview of the space and costs $85.
What’s in the Darkroom
The darkroom includes everything needed for black and white film processing and silver gelatin printing. You’ll find film tanks, a film drying cabinet, and enlargers for 35mm, medium, and large format negatives. We also provide trays in various sizes and a heat press for fibre-based paper prints.
Using Your Own or Our Chemicals
We know photographers often prefer their own materials. For this reason, chemicals are not included in the hire fee. However, we stock a full range of Ilford darkroom chemicals available for separate purchase, including developer, stop bath, fixer, and more.
Booking and Payment
You can book your darkroom session from 3 days up to 3 months in advance. Payments are made on entry by card (excluding AMEX), Eftpos, or cash. Members receive discounted pricing on films, papers, and chemicals.
Workshops and Contact
If you’re new to film photography, we offer beginner workshops covering film processing and darkroom printing. These sessions build confidence before working independently.

Membership Details
To hire our darkroom, you must be a member. The joining fee is $99, with a yearly renewal of $40. Concession rates are $93.50 to join and $35 to renew.
All new members need to complete a one-time induction session to learn how to use the space and equipment. This is not a teaching workshop and the cost is $85.
Membership includes two free hours of darkroom use per year, plus discounts on film, paper, and chemicals.

The darkroom is equipped with the following enlargers that can be set up for negatives from 35mm to 4×5″:
- Leitz Focomat V35, Autofocus
- Agfa Varioscop
- Durst M 601
- Durst M 670 Colour
- Durst Laborator 1200
It’s also equipped with a lightbox, Paterson film processing tanks and spirals, an automated print washer, a film drier, trays in different sizes up to 20×30″, a heat press for fiber based paper prints, Kodak filters, and other standard darkroom equipment. Red and orange safety lights are installed.
We stock Ilford films, papers and chemicals. Members receive 10% discount.
