Session 1: Principles of Design and Emotions with Joachim Froese, 09.00 – 11.00
The morning session with Joachim Froese will be focusing on the Principles of Design and Emotions. The session begins with a meet-and-greet followed by a lecture on finding inspiration and the basic principles of modern design. Your first Exercise will be exploring inner balance in a 2- dimensional context. The second exercise will be extending the concept into a 3-dimensional space. The session concludes with a show-and-tell segment and image critique.
9.00 – 9.10 Meet and Greet.
9.10 – 9.30 Lecture: Where to look for Inspiration. Why Instagram is no solution. Basic principles of modern Design.
9.30 – 10.00 Exercise One. The discovery of your inner balance in a 2-dimensional context. The move from principles of design to feelings and emotions.
10.00 – 10.30 Exercise Two in the Gallery. The extension of the exercise into a 3-dimensional space.
10.30 – 11.00 Show and Tell: Looking at Images, Critique.

Session 2: Portraits in space with David Symons 11.15 am– 13.15 pm
In his session, David Symons delves into the exploration of space and balance in relation to portraits. It includes both indoor and outdoor exercises to broaden your understanding. The session again wraps up with a show-and-tell segment and image critique.
11.15 – 11.35 Lecture.
11.35 – 12.05 Exercise One (Inside). Exploration of the use of space and balance in relation to portraits.
12.15 – 12.45 Exercise Two (Outside). Taking the experience outdoor.
12.45 – 13.15 Show and Tell: Looking at Images, Critique.

Session 3: Associations, Repetition with Eric Victor 14.00 – 16.00
Eric Victor leads a session focused on Associations and Repetition. A lecture that introduces vocabulary and conceptual ideas essential for understanding modern photography. You will then engage in outdoor exercises, working on individual projects that reflect the concepts discussed. The session again concludes with a show-and-sell segment for image critique.
14.00 – 14.30 Lecture. A presentation of the vocabulary and the various conceptual ideas which help in the understanding of modern photography.
14.30 – 16.00 Exercise (Outdoors).
Participants will work on their individual projects, finding their personal voice and images which relate to the concepts presented in the lecture and the morning exercises.
16.00 – 16.30 Show and Tell: Looking at Images, Critique.

The Tutors:
Joachim Froese is an art photographer and educator who holds a PhD/Art from RMIT in Melbourne.
Joachim works across a range of platforms from digital capture to historical printing processes. His photographs are renowned for their technical brilliance and their conceptual depth. He has shown his work for almost 30 years in major solo, group and travelling exhibitions across Australia, Europe, Asia, and North America and his images have featured in many national and international art publications. A number of his works are held in public collections such as the National Gallery of Australia, the National Portrait Gallery of Australia, and the Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA).
Joachim is a highly experienced educator who has held regular teaching appointments and guest lectures on photography at universities in Australia and Germany since 2001. He teaches from a practitioner’s point of view and enjoys sharing his unique knowledge across a broad spectrum of photographic processes.
David Symons “The idea that the photograph can traverse the line between the real and imagined, the outer world and the inner world, is the great appeal of the medium for me.”
David’s work has been exhibited throughout Australia. His work is held in The Art Gallery of Western Australia Collection, The National Library of Australia, and the State Library of Queensland.
He has been a finalist for prestigious prizes including The Olive Cotton Award and the IRIS Award for portraiture.
David’s photobook ‘The Man from Apophenia’, was a finalist in the Australian and New Zealand Photobook Awards in 2019.
Eric Victor is a retired advertising photographer who ran Momentum Studio for over 40 years.
He has always kept his door open to talented young photographers. This collaboration involved him in teaching photography at university and industry level and conducting workshops and lectures for Rollei, Sinar and Broncolor in Hong Kong, Singapore, Manila, Jakarta and Beijing.
Eric was the director of the mentoring program for the Australian Institute of Professional Photography.
His current involvement with The Centre is a continuation of the same goal that he always aimed for – the betterment of photography.
